JPG, PNG, WebP · processed in your browser

Grayscale Image is for a photo you want in black and white — a portrait, a scan of a form, or a product shot for a layout that should not keep color. It is a Local tool: JPG, PNG, or WebP (up to 20) stay on this device. The browser applies camera EXIF while decoding, then each pixel becomes a Rec. 709 luminance value. Width, height, and PNG or WebP alpha stay the same. Color is not recoverable from the download. This page does not compress, crop, or mirror. For a smaller file use Compress Image. For a reflection use Flip Image.

This tool is free to use.

How to make an image grayscale

  1. Add one to twenty JPG, PNG, or WebP files. Processing stays on this device.
  2. Confirm Grayscale is Local — the conversion runs in a Web Worker; files are not uploaded.
  3. There is no slider. Every pixel uses the same luminance weights, and alpha is copied through.
  4. Process. JPEG and WebP are re-encoded around quality 90. PNG stays lossless.
  5. Download one file or a ZIP. To mirror instead, use Flip Image. To change dimensions, use Resize.

Grayscale image FAQs

Does the file leave this device?

No. Grayscale is a Local tool. Work runs in a Web Worker on your device and the file is not uploaded.

How is gray calculated?

Each pixel uses Rec. 709 weights: 0.2126 red, 0.7152 green, and 0.0722 blue. The same number is written to all three channels. Alpha is copied unchanged.

Will the picture stay the same size?

Yes. Width and height do not change. PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPEG has no alpha, so the gray photo is opaque.

Can I get the colors back?

No. The download is the gray bitmap. Keep the original if you still need color.

How is this different from Compress or Flip?

Compress Image shrinks the file and keeps color. Flip Image mirrors pixels and keeps color. This page only removes color.

What about phone photos?

The browser applies camera EXIF while decoding, then the luminance pass runs on that upright bitmap. A sideways preview should be turned first with Rotate Image.

Does this read text or remove a background?

No. Text painted into the pixels stays painted, only in gray. A cutout is Remove Background, which uploads. Reading text from a photo is image OCR, which also uploads.
