Excel to JSON is for a workbook you need in a script, an app, or a config file — an export, a price list, or a research sheet — when CSV would flatten everything to the first sheet. It is a Local tool: one .xlsx, .xls, or .xlsm stays on this device. SheetJS reads every sheet and writes one JSON object whose keys are the sheet names. Each value is an array of row objects. Formulas become the cached values already stored in the file, not the formula text. Charts, cell styles, images, and macros are not in the JSON. Dates are written as ISO strings.

How to convert Excel to JSON

  1. Add one Excel workbook. Processing stays on this device — the file is not uploaded.
  2. Confirm Excel to JSON is Local — SheetJS reads the workbook in the browser.
  3. Process. There is no sheet picker: every sheet is included under its own key.
  4. Download the .json file and open it in an editor. Empty sheets become empty arrays.
  5. To turn that JSON back into a workbook, use JSON to Excel. For a single-sheet text file, use Excel to CSV. Printed pages are Excel to PDF, which uploads.

Does the workbook leave this device?

No. This is a Local tool. SheetJS reads the file in the browser and the workbook is not uploaded.

How is this different from Excel to CSV?

Excel to CSV exports only the first sheet as plain text. This page exports every sheet as one JSON object keyed by sheet name.

What happens to formulas?

You get the cached calculated value stored in the cell, not the formula string and not a live spreadsheet. If Excel never saved a cached value, that cell can be empty.

Are charts, styles, and pictures included?

No. JSON holds cell values. Charts, fonts, fills, embedded images, and macros are dropped.

How are dates written?

Date cells become ISO 8601 strings in the JSON. Other numbers stay numbers. Blank cells are null.

Can I choose one sheet?

Not on this page. Every sheet is written. Delete the keys you do not need in an editor, or use Excel to CSV when you only want the first sheet as text.

What if the file is password protected?

This page does not unlock workbooks. Remove the password in Excel first, then convert here. The result is still Local.
